Just completed a fresh install of Fedora 15 x86 and rebuilt the stock Fedora
kernel (2.6.40.6) keeping the exact same configuration apart from the addition
of the two patches from Comment 81 and Comment 82 and it fixes the problem as
far as I can see. 

Boots fine without kernel param "nomodeset".
glxgears gives approx 57-60fps.
Gnome3 much more responsive.
