Looks like this is the same problem that happened to me a few minutes ago. I
couldn't get a backtrace (didn't have the magic sysrq keys enabled). My chip is
the same and the symptoms are exactly the same. Even the music stopped to play.
Compositing (KWin 4.6.2) was enabled at that time and it happened while I was
scrolling in Firefox 3.6.17 (an hour or so after returning from hibernate).

I'm using kernel 2.6.38 for nearly two months now (2.6.38.6 for maybe a week)
and this was the first time I ran into this issue. Maybe KWin 4.6.2 triggers
it, because I just moved from KDE 4.4.5 to 4.6.2 a week ago. But I don't know,
as it is hard to reproduce.

lspci -v output for probably interesting devices:

Software versions:
# emerge -pv kwin mesa xorg-server gentoo-sources xf86-video-ati

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild R ] media-libs/mesa-7.10.2 USE="classic gallium gles llvm nptl
-debug -hardened -motif -pic (-selinux)" VIDEO_CARDS="radeon -intel -mach64
-mga -nouveau -r128 -savage -sis -tdfx -via -vmware" 0 kB
[ebuild R ] x11-base/xorg-server-1.9.5 USE="ipv6 nptl udev xorg -dmx -doc
-kdrive -minimal -static-libs -tslib" 0 kB
[ebuild R ] sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.38-r5 USE="symlink -build
-deblob" 0 kB
[ebuild R ] kde-base/kwin-4.6.2 USE="opengl xcomposite (-aqua) -debug
(-kdeenablefinal) (-kdeprefix) -xinerama" 0 kB
[ebuild R ] x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati-6.14.1 0 kB

I'm using the gallium driver. gentoo-sources-2.6.38-r5 is basically kernel
2.6.38.6 with some patches that are not related to the DRM module, as far as I
can see.
