Unfortunately not. It's one of those typical laptop BIOSes where its a
small miracle if it lets you set the clock and the boot device sequence.

I thought that might be the case. It is a little bizzare setup.
Luckily(?) the non-free ATI/AMD driver (version 11.5 not 11.4 in Debian)
works so I've got something at least.
If you do hear of a fix the let me know and I'll run it up to test it
out. As you said, it's not looking likely to happen in the short term.
