sleep 10 makes no difference.

I also see this behaviour when the gnome power management kicks in and turns
the screen off, so I don't think it's got anything to do with late arriving X
events.

NB. In case I'm not being clear: the screen doesn't come back displaying an
image: the monitor turns on with the display completely black, then it goes to
sleep again in a never ending cycle.
