You can try dumping the display registers in the working and non-working cases
using radeonreg which is available here:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/~airlied/radeontool/

As root:
./radeonreg regs radeon > working.dump

./radeonreg regs radeon > broken.dump

And attach the dumps here.
