Does it work better with a 3.0 kernel?  If your system uses a lot of graphics
memory, you may end up running low and the memory manager has to swap a lot of
stuff around.  Kernel 2.6.39 did not have support for vram beyond the PCI BAR
(generally 256 MB) on cayman cards.  Support for using the full amount of VRAM
was added in 3.0.
