Alex,
When I attempt to debug using gdb (per wiki), the server won't stay up long
enough for gdb to connect.
When I use your script method for a single computer, when I enter startx, I got
a bunch of lines on the console containing only two dots on each line.  When
xinit finally gives up trying to connect, there is nothing in the gdb_log.$PID
file.
