The same problem on MSI laptop, I have no heat sensor (at least detectable by
sensors-detect) but comparing only CPU temperature fglrx is up to 15°C cooler
then radeon driver. 

With radeon driver the colling is quite loud all the time, and makes work realy
bad especially in night.

For me system hang once on fglrx, but no shutdowns or hanging on radeon driver
- cooling system works still quite good.
