I recently thought to myself, that indeed, it somehow became better (now kernel
2.6.35.4, Xorg 1.7.7, radeon 6.13.1)  ... . 

However it's not 100% reliable yet. My impression is, that specifically when
the screen sleeps for a longer time (~>30min), then the wake-up doesn't always
work.

Difficult to quantify, since it's sporadic. I should start a systematic
statistical observation, to get something more objective ;).
