As of ubuntu maverick

xserver-xorg-video-ati:
  Installed: 1:6.13.1-1ubuntu5

the behavior somewhat changed but is still problematic. The trick with
switching to text console and back does not work. The graphic screen however
wakes up after pressing a key or moving the mouse, typically after 30-60
seconds but I have measured times from 10 seconds to 5 minutes.

Usable but still quite annoying.
