A short interim report: KMS works fine with 2.6.32-4-amd64 after I
downgraded the following packages, see attached dmesg output:

[ENTFERNEN, ABHÄNGIGKEITEN] linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64
[DEAKTUALISIERUNG] firmware-linux 0.24 -> 0.23
[DEAKTUALISIERUNG] firmware-linux-free 2.6.32-12 -> 2.6.32-9
[DEAKTUALISIERUNG] firmware-linux-nonfree 0.24 -> 0.23
[DEAKTUALISIERUNG] libudev0 153-1 -> 151-3
[DEAKTUALISIERUNG] linux-base 2.6.32-12 -> 2.6.32-11
[DEAKTUALISIERUNG] udev 153-1 -> 151-3
[DEAKTUALISIERUNG] xserver-common 2:1.7.7-1 -> 2:1.7.6.901-3
[DEAKTUALISIERUNG] xserver-xorg-core 2:1.7.7-1 -> 2:1.7.6.901-3
[DEAKTUALISIERUNG] xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.13.0-1 -> 1:6.12.6-1
[DEAKTUALISIERUNG] xserver-xorg-video-fbdev 1:0.4.2-2 -> 1:0.4.2-1
[DEAKTUALISIERUNG] xserver-xorg-video-radeon 1:6.13.0-1 -> 1:6.12.6-1
[DEAKTUALISIERUNG] xserver-xorg-video-vesa 1:2.3.0-2 -> 1:2.3.0-1

I tend to suspect :-) linux-base-12 as it came with
linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64 but did influence both
linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64 and linux-image-2.6.32-4-amd64 (because of
the linux-base downgrade linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64 had to be removed).
If I find some time I will try to update the packages again step by step.

Best regards,
