All checked. I tried tried selecting PAL with xrandr already, and
kernel is indeed 2.6.34 (the problem was also there with earlier
kernels and no KMS). Using xrandr to switch from NTSC (default in my
card) to  PAL does have an effect, I get proper colours and stable
vertical sync, but the horizontal is out of sync.
