I tried this with kernel 2.6.32.15 (it wouldn't compile with Alex's patch), and
it didn't help.  I'm planning to test this with kernel 2.6.33 and possibly
2.6.34 in the near future.

I'm using a Gateway LT31, which is essentially the same machine.
