vbltest does indeed indicate some problem:

[root at hugin vbltest]# ./vbltest
trying to load module i915...failed.
trying to load module radeon...success.
starting count: 13013
select timed out or error (ret 0)
select timed out or error (ret 0)
select timed out or error (ret 0)
select timed out or error (ret 0)

But if I turn off X (still KMS though):

[root at hugin vbltest]# ./vbltest
trying to load module i915...failed.
trying to load module radeon...success.
starting count: 13289
freq: 60.27Hz
freq: 60.02Hz
freq: 60.02Hz
freq: 60.02Hz
freq: 60.02Hz
