I first worked around the problem by downgrading back to
the previous version of xserver. It turns out that "get-edid"
does not produce anything useful from the Sony G400 in that instance,
either. Yet, xserver managed to figure out the monitor modes
correctly. Was there some code in the xserver for older monitors
that has gone missing?
