how would I check for that? simply grep-ing for DRI doesn't return anything:

# dmesg | grep DRI
# grep DRI /var/log/messages

can I provide clues somehow?

yes, IMHO it's looking for (EE) messages in the X log, and if it finds
any, it things X has failed to start..
