This is just to say that I've verified that forcing UMS with a file:
/etc/modprobe.d$ cat radeon.conf
# Turn off KMS
# Put this in /etc/modprobe.d
options radeon modeset=0

still allows me to work with the large external monitor even after the BIOS
upgrade.
