Thank you!  That works nicely; it patched reasonably easily against
the Ubuntu packages. Both assaultcube and Google earth (after
I remembered the 32bit libs) work nicely with it.

I've filed an Ubuntu bug:

and also built the modified packages in an  ubuntu ppa:
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-treblig/+archive/mesafiddle

(Getting Google Earth to work is a bit fiddly given the binaries
are in the ia32-libs package, so I did some manual copying around).
