Does using xrandr to change the video mode rather than fn-f5 work (don't press
fn-f5 at all)?  E.g.,
xrandr --output VGA-0 --off
xrandr --output LVDS --mode 1024x768
xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1024x768
xrandr --output LVDS --auto
etc.
