Ahh, many thanks - all I needed was modprobe fbcon first.

So all along I was just going back to VGA thinking it was OK and using the same
mode because of the messages like - 

device: 'fb0': device_add
PM: Adding info for No Bus:fb0
fb0: radeondrmfb frame buffer device
