Just out of curiosity, I reverted to previous versions and it still persists. 
I'm really stumped.

(I installed f11 with the update repo enabled and got the below version of
mesa, the rest I reverted to what was installed originally too, which happened
to be dist-f11)

And I just installed git master of libdrm and xf86-video-ati and the problem
still persists.  GAH.  As I have time I'll continue to install stuff according
to http://www.x.org/wiki/radeonBuildHowTo and see what happens - maybe I'll
just jump to full KMS...
