Corrupted or no display with KMS (Radeon HD3470)

Hi all,

FYI I filed this bug in Mandriva bugzilla. Are these symptoms known? Any
additional info I should provide?

Description of problem:
I installed mesa 7.6, kernel-tmb-laptop-latest and x11-driver-video-ati from
main/testing.
According to instructions I added "options radeon modeset=1" to
/etc/modprobe.conf.

After reboot, I either get a blank screen or a screen with colored stripes on
it. The console reacts to blindly typed commands but otherwise the machine is
unusable.
