Radeon mobility X300 with acceleration; right side of desktop, missing columns

Thanks for the reply - I appreciate it.   I believe compiz was not
running (pgrep compiz ->'', gnome desktop effects disabled) but in any
case, I have the same effect with all compiz packages uninstalled,
even after a reboot,
