The problem does exist with xserver that comes with Ubuntu Karmic.

Dependency on CPU speed is inconclusive.

There is a sure way to have a working screen, and I am using now every time
now: switch to text console and before the text image appears, but not too
fast, switch back to graphic screen (the time between hitting key combos must
be between ca. 1 and 2 seconds, make it shorter or longer and I still have
black screen).

I will pull from git head and rebuild, and then report.
