radeon problems: VGA out + 3D

Thanks for the response. Problem solved, see below.

As for question 2: I am pretty sure I was using fglrx (I remember I did an 
lsmod, etc), but this is the past, difficult to re-check. And the 
non-functionality of the Fn+F5 keys was just a side remark.

I discovered that only xserver-xorg-video-radeon was installed, which 
could drive my monitor (seemingly), but other drivers 
(xserver-xorg-video-ati and its dependencies) were not. After installing 
them everything just works fine: at boot time both the VGA projector and 
my monitor come up, and the problem with the CAD application is also gone.
Sorry for the fake alarm.

Anyway, your xrandr tip was very useful, a new world opened in front of me 
:-)
