See http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=524794 . My theory is that
apps tend to select the 32 bit ARGB visual with current versions of xserver and
Mesa, resulting in automatic compositing of the GLX window. In theory running
affected apps with XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 should work around it, but there's
a libGL issue which may cause apps to fail to find a visual at all. I'm working
on getting that fixed.
