I have the same issue with xscreensaver's GLSlideshow screensaver.

When I set the value of "Always show at least this much of the image" option
between 75% and 100%, I get the error message when the screensaver starts and I
don't see the pictures. When I change the setting to somewhere between 50% to
75% the issue disappears.

I am using Xubuntu Jaunty 9.04.
