kernel panic on shutdown

Dear all,

I've been experiencing this with recent versions of xf86-driver-ati,
currently running 6.12.2 on a Thinkpad T40. I believe it is caused by
the video driver, apologies in advance if it isn't. I'm running a Gentoo
system with kernel 2.6.28-tuxonice, it has happened with an older
version of the kernel as well.

This kernel panic happens consistently whenever I'm issuing a system
shutdown from gdm. What happens is that the system switches to console
mode and starts shutting down various daemons, then invoking a kernel
panic. This is particularly bothering because it happens before the
filesystems get a chance to properly flush their journals... bear in
mind that this is a mobile system so it gets shutdown fairly often.

I can work around this glitch if I manually shift to console mode
(Ctrl-Alt-F1), login and invoke shutdown from the command line. Also,
switching back and forth between console and X modes seems to work fine.

Here are a couple of snapshots showing the tail of the panic trace. Let
me know if you need more information (I'm a complete newbie when it
comes to deciphering panic messages).

Thanks for your help.
