In order to use the free drivers, you have to make sure

      * The fglrx kernel module isn't loaded
      * The X server doesn't load any components installed by fglrx
        (grep fglrx Xorg.0.log.radeon*)

The easiest way to achieve this is probably to remove all fglrx
packages.
