ATI Radeon x1650 Pro AGP -- very poor performance

Hi,

I am running a 2600 MHz P4 on an older MB (MS-6701) that only supports
AGP graphic cards. My graphic card is an ATI Radeon x1650 Pro AGP
(r530 chip as far as I know) manufactured by HIS:

$ lspci -nn | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc
Radeon X1650 Pro
     [1002:71c1] (rev 9e)

Graphic performance with my default Ubuntu 9.04 installation was poor
(glxgears: 70-80 fps). Two attempts to install the proprietary (fglrx)
driver(s) had dismal results: on one occasion, the screen consisted of
just white and black lines, on another, the screen remained black and
i was unable to change to a text-only login.

I therefore followed the instructions at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver to install the radeon
driver. After some tweaking (here is my current xorg.conf:
http://home.arcor.de/kiteki/ubuntu/xorg.conf ), glxgears reports
between 90 and 100 fps. This is the respective logfile:
http://home.arcor.de/kiteki/ubuntu/Xorg.0.log .

   $ glxinfo | grep vendor
     server glx vendor string: SGI
     client glx vendor string: SGI
     OpenGL vendor string: Mesa Project

Graphic performance is visibly poor (when I type text, it sometimes
takes a fraction of a second before a word appears on the screen).

The card works fine under Windows XP (I use grub to boot into either
XP or into Ubuntu).

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Fred
