Generally finding issues and designing is what eats most of time :)

We need some more info from you.

First of all is that hang really related to xf86-video-ati (radeon DDX
driver)? Can you change default init to 3 (vim /etc/inittab) and check
if machine boots fine every time? Or maybe it's "radeon" kernel module
that causes your hang?

Can you ssh from other machine to your hanged machine?
