Summary: noise (sound not video) when moving cursor or window
with a x300 ( rv370 m22 ) integrated card
Product: xorg
Version: unspecified
Platform: Other
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
Severity: normal

Component: Driver/Radeon

Bonjour,
It's a very strange thing that happens.
I own a toshiba m40-140 laptop with a french keyboard (don't worry, I'm french
too !!), and the video card is a m22 x300 (rv370) ati.
I always had to use the propriatory driver to avoid the present problem. But
now ati doesn't support anymore this card and in jaunty or karmic ubuntu,
there's no more propriatory drivers for my card.
I use the free driver radeon and I get an horrible noise when moving cursor or
moving a window or watching some video.
This noise looks like heads of the hard disk moving very fastly. But perhaps is
it another thing (can video card make such a noise ?) It's really ugly and make
the use of my laptop very unpleasant (very very). The fan noise was enough for
me !
I've looked around and find nothing after hours of searching.
I've tried the vesa driver : no noise with it but the screen is not good
because the vesa resolutions don't match my screen resolution (1280x800).
I was thinking about some memory swap problem and tried to increase videoram in
xorg.conf, but the driver doesn't accept more than 128000 (the xorg log seeems
tell that detected memory is around 132000)
In fact it's a very old problem that I can't avoid anymore.
I've tried to correct it a lot and for a long time now....and I hope that
someone can help to solve it.
