I recently attempted to install debian on a dual G5 2x2GHz with a retail Radeon 9600 Mac & PC 256MB AGP card, and the video colors a corrupted.
Taking a snapshot doesn't show the problem, but I posted a picture of the screen with the default debian background at this location:

Note: I had to install an extension named "ATI Rom Xtender" into MacOSX on this same computer with this card to have a correct display, otherwise, I had the same garbage in MacOSX as I have now in 
gnome.
It seems that this extension replaces parts of the native driver in the card ROM, to fix some problems, without it, the screen resolution can't be changed, the colors are damaged, and the computer 
won't go to sleep. Maybe this "ROM patch" has not been taken in accound in the xorg radeon driver for this specific card ?
