Sounds like a GPU lockup.

Does:
Option "renderaccel" "false"
help?

when you say "just fine" do you mean "didn't used to hang" or something else?
Any chance you could use git bisect on the xserver to track down what commit
between 1.4.99 and 1.5 broke things?
