Screen blacked out - graphics driver issue

On a Commell LV-682 with an ATI RS690E :

We sometimes see (right before the login screen for Red Hat 5.2) a black/blank
screen.
We must hit cntl+alt+backspace to get the X server to come alive.

Also - At 1152x864, some people are seeing video jitters under their mouse
pointers.
