Right, the bug is that even without a compositing manager it gets broken.
Backingstore (IIRC) was rewritten to use offscreen pixmaps when COMPOSITE is
active. And since mplayer asks for such a window, all of its output is put
offscreen and not subjected to vsync by most drivers.
I haven't really had time to follow up on this, but someone else might be able
to? :)
As for the bug here, I can play around with it tonight and see what I come up
with.
