Thank you for your rapid response. As I said I used Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10 as it
is without any changes in settings except for xorg.conf where I inserted
settings to use xorg ati open source driver: it is self installed by ubuntu and
its version is 6.9.0 (ubuntu package xserver-xorg-video-ati
1:6.9.0+git20081003.f9826a56-0ubuntu2, and as ubuntu says it is generated with
xorg driver module xf86-video-ati).
I hope those details can help you to better understand the problem. Can I do
any other test or settings change for more detail ?
