Bug #231081 - ati driver will not turn on external display

I am getting by using the vesa driver. With it I am
able to use my eternal monitor; however, it is merely
a mirror of my LVDS limited to 1024x768. 

Which leads me to my 2 questions:

1 - Since the newest OS ATI driver is not working with
my card (ATI IGP 330M), is there any way I can get
better than 1280x1024 to my external monitor?

2 - Should I fall back to a previous version of xorg
and ATI in order to regain the functionality I had
before? If so, how?
