I tried the latest source code from the git tree and it doesn't help.

$ ls -l /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/ati_drv.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 51944 2008-01-22 13:38
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//ati_drv.so
$ xrandr -q
xrandr: Output LVDS is not disconnected but has no modes
$ xrandr --output LVDS --off
xrandr: Output LVDS is not disconnected but has no modes
$ xrandr -q
xrandr: Output LVDS is not disconnected but has no modes
