If there is anyway the acpi driver for your laptop can disable the video bios
routine that gets called when you hit the lid button that would help.  There is
also a way to stop the bios from touching the hw on lid events via the bios
scratch regs.  I attempted to implement support for this, but I don't have an
atom based laptop, so apparently it doesn't work yet.  Let me see if I can sort
out some patches for you to try.
