I agree, I just don't know how apple does it.

if you could use radeontool from here:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/~airlied/radeontool
and dump the regs when the backlight is on and when it's off and attach the
dumps, I'll see what I can find. as root:
./radeontool regmatch '*' > blon.dump
./radeontool regmatch '*' > bloff.dump
