I picked this up once again. Some more digging and trying to understand how
things works i found out the following.

After boot the GPIO_MONID register is set to 0x00000303. Unsetting the
VGA_DDC_DATA_OUTPUT and VGA_DDC_CLK_OUTPUT bits makes talking over the i2c bus
work for me...
