I don't know about the internals (whether mesa is involved) but with

	Option 		"AccelMethod"		"EXA"
	Option		"EnablePageFlip"	"on"

I get around ~950 FPS. Without those options ~550. I also read that 
glxgears is not the right tool for benchmarking :P
