I just tried a third variant, in order to verify the suspicion that the ati
driver is able to restore some context necessary to enable proper DVI-out:

c) going to sleep with Xorg running...
1. switching from DVI dual-head Xorg session to text VT
2. inducing suspend-to-ram with "pbbcmd sleep"
3. waking up again
4. starting a new 2nd Xorg instance ("X :2")
5. switching back to the first Xorg session (-> colors ok)
6. switching to the 2nd Xorg instance (-> colors bad!)
7. switching back to the first Xorg session (-> colors still ok)

-> external DVI output still fine with Xorg instance kept over suspend, but
off-color with Xorg instance started right after wakup from console...

...any ideas?
