Using the Radeon driver with 3D enabled locks the graphics system and
hardlocks the system. This prevent the system from being able to boot to
runlevel 5. The only way to start the graphics system with 3D enabled is to
boot to runlevel 3 and then go directly into kde with startx. Leaving the
graphics system, you cannot go back in without a hardlock and hard reset. This
has been exhaustively investigated with Novell and the problem was identified
with the r300 driver. There is an incredibly detailed step by step
