I've been playing a bit more with this. With the code in git #master,

 - i removed all hints in xorg.conf that I wanted a dualhead, even
removed MergedFB
 - it starts up a-ok in singlehead mode
 - it starts up ok with a DVI ext monitor (no DVI signal though)
 - it reliably segfaults if it finds the monitor attached via the
DVI-VGA adapter (xorg.conf and log attached)
 - as soon as I say MergedFB explicitly, I am back to X getting wedged
and needing kill -9, the last line being "No valid timing info from
BIOS"

I've also found this bug
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3621 which tracks your
patchseries and their merge into GIT. Interesting stuff!

Alex -- is it all merged in? I can't get to
http://gitweb.freedesktop.org/ to see if you have a dev tree of your
own out there.

cheers
