does this happen when you boot the laptop with the lid closed?  Unfortunately,
at the moment, we are only able to detect the lid status via the scratch regs
if the laptop lid was closed when the machine was initially booted.  After that
we probably have to tie into the kernel acpi stuff assuming that gives good lid
status info.
