It is for the new driver. The problem is randr. We don't know what monitors
may be attached when or whether a user may want to switch between single or
multi-head, etc. As such we try and make a reasonable default desktop size to
accommodate the largest number of users. If the default was 1400x1050 and you
had a 1600x1200 monitor, your desktop wouldn't be big enough. All of these
problems will go away when we finally get a decent memory manager, but we are
not there yet. Right now we are still tweaking things trying to find the best
middle ground until ttm lands.
