well... I'd definitely like to get it supported, but we haven't had much luck
as of yet.

yes.  Try the randr-1.2 branch in git:
git clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/git/xorg/driver/xf86-video-ati
cd xf86-video-ati
git checkout randr-1.2
or of you already have the git tree checked out:
git checkout randr-1.2

You'll need at least xserver 1.3
