Sorry for not getting back to this earlier. Yes, that does indeed help.
Question is why it detects an external display when none is hooked up,
and then only after suspend.

I haven't been able to build the experimental version of
xserver-xorg-video-ati easily and it isn't built for powerpc, so I
couldn't try that yet.
